Silent study with friends: focus sessions that work

Silent study means studying quietly at the same time as others, with a shared timer. Nobody teaches. Just knowing others are working keeps you at your desk.

It is the same reason libraries work. When the people around you are focused, it is harder to get up and scroll. A silent study call brings that feeling home.

The timer matters as much as the company. Short, fixed blocks with a real break are easier to start and easier to finish than "I'll study for 3 hours".

How to do it

  1. Pick a timer: 25 minutes focus + 5 minutes break (Pomodoro) for hard or boring topics, 50 + 10 for long problem-solving.
  2. Decide the task before the timer starts: "10 questions from Chapter 4", not "Physics".
  3. Mics off during focus. Everyone works in silence.
  4. In the break, say one line: what you finished and what is next. Then stretch, drink water, look away from the screen.
  5. Do 2–4 rounds, then stop. Write down what you finished.

Keep the phone from winning

  • Keep the call open on the screen and put the phone face down.
  • Turn off notifications from other apps during the session.
  • If you need to look something up, write it down and check it in the break.

How Samjhao helps

  • Silent study rooms with 25/5 or 50/10 timers built in.
  • Mics turn off automatically during focus time and open again in the break, so you can chat for 5 minutes.
  • Invite your study partners, or keep the room link-only or partners-only.

Questions students ask

What is a 'study with me' session?

A session where people study silently at the same time, usually with a shared timer. It works because being around focused people makes it easier to stay focused.

Is 25/5 or 50/10 better?

25/5 is easier to start and good for hard or boring work. 50/10 suits long problem-solving once you are warmed up. Try both and keep what you can finish.

Should we talk during silent study?

Only in the breaks. Talking during focus time breaks everyone's concentration.

How many rounds should I do?

2 to 4 rounds in one sitting is a good target. After that, take a longer break.

Can I do silent study with students I don't know?

Yes, if you keep personal details private. Silent rooms are low-risk because mics are off most of the time, and you can still block or report anyone.
